Going out on a high note. See our 09-1 preliminary results on the Sale results page
Hi all,
By now you will have heard that we are going into recess. We will complete the 09-1 pool to be offered for sale on the 29th May in Sydney but after that its hard to say what will happen.
I don't want people to think we will continue to receive and class mohair on a general basis. No, we won't though we may well collect a number of efficient and knowledgeable clients to support and market their mohair through AMMO. This depends on what might be organised in the furure.
The point is that growers have to take the initiative with their mohair. They have to understand and class their own fibre before any broker can deal with it. "They'll handle it" is not good enough.
Here is the text of the letter sent to current clients.
11/5/09
Dear NMP Client,
It causes me great sadness to inform you that due to decreasing volumes of mohair, National Mohair Pool will cease trading as a Broker following the completion of the 09-1 pool and the sale on the 29th May. Payments for that pool will follow as usual. The company will not be wound up at present and may well continue to perform a role in the future.
After some 35 years of tireless and continuous effort my personal disappointment cannot be underestimated. I am sure the change will also be a blow to my father Max, and the two leading buyers (Ian Laycock and Dewavrin Australia) who, together, began mohair marketing in Australia from 1976. Perhaps unfortunately all things change and the mohair industry must change as well.
In making this decision the NMP Board considered the possibility ofincreasing charges to cover the continuing (but small) trading losses being incurred at each Pool but felt that a better option would be to create a situation where most of Australia’s mohair could be handled by the remaining broker, thus creating a more viable situation.
I would wish to thank the National Mohair Pool Board and share holders, and the many people associated with the company in the collection and classing of mohair over the period. In particular I would recognise the efforts of Shayne Cunningham, Herman Van Haeff, Neville Mason and Alan Dunstan for their support and physical input to the pooling operation. I would also thank Denise Cunningham for her sharp logic and tireless efforts in both market research and editorial oversight in support of NMP.
While we have yet to discuss a number of issues with the Australian Mohair Marketing Organisation, I wish them well as they continue to come to grips with marketing the Australian clip. No doubt there will be a variety of new arrangements and I will continue to work to ensure there is a better future for Australian Mohair.
Finally I would thank you for your support over the years.
Yours sincerely
Doug Stapleton
Manager
What can I say, for for 29 years we tried and, I believe, did a good job for Australian mohair producers. We did a lot with innovative marketing and introduced a lot of new concepts. But, ultimately the industry made its choice. So we are prepared, at present, to go with the flow. Our big disappointment has been the loss of clients to those who believe they can get better prices and services directly in South Africa. Maybe, but maybe not, and the big issue is what do those people think about those left in Australia. How will those people benefit from derserting the current supply chain model? Maybe time will tell.
The second disappointment must be to the people who trusted me to provide the service of Broker. We believe we held out longer than was reasonable for both a recovery and a realisation of how technology could be used. To those people we apologise.
